Gemology is the science of identifying, studying, grading and valuing precious stones, natural gems, diamonds, asteroids, etc. Starting out as an exclusive branch of mineralogy as most gems are natural minerals, it has grown into a science of its own. The expansive production of man-made jewels in 1970s and 1980s and the introduction of refined gem treatment processes since 1990s have led to a more multi-disciplinary approach. Gemology has evolved into an important application in the gems and jewelry industry.

Inorder to efficiently identify gemstones, it is essential to gain knowledge about categorization, terms and study of their properties. Gems are first sorted based on their structure, relative density, refractive index, other optical properties; whereas the physical property of “hardness” is defined by the non-linear Mohs scale. The internal structure is scrutinized through a microscopic study to determine whether a gem is synthetic or natural. When the gemstones are in a rough state, the gemologist studies the external structure; the host rock and mineral affiliation; and natural and polished colour. These factors are important for valuing or appraising cut and polished gemstones. The spectroscopic method is a major factor in analysing cut gemstones inorder to comprehend the atomic structure and identify its origin.

A gemologist, otherwise known as a jeweller or gem expert, works with and identifies precious stones and gems. The main responsibility of a gemologist is to carefully examine certain gems and stones, through microscopes and other magnification equipment, inorder to determine the gems’ make, value, and genuineness.

CAREERS IN GEMOLOGY
With advances in gemstone synthesis, gemology has become an important field of study and has a variety of options for a career path as one of the following:
- Diamond and gemstone buyer
- Merchandiser
- Lab researcher and grader
- Appraiser
- Retailer
- Wholesaler
- Jewelry designer
- Auction house or museum specialist
- Jewelry photographer
- Jewelry blogger
- Lapidary artist or
- Educator
Gemology is fast growing into an important area of specialization and the study of gemstones, treated and manufactured counterparts is essential to avoid frauds and protect the consumers. Inorder to make aspiring jewellery designers adept with the various aspects of the industry requirements, Gemology, is taught as part of the module for Diploma in Fine Jewellery Design offered at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore.
