Unearthing the Past: Students of Interior Design showcasing Ancient Civilizations
The students of the Diploma in Interior Design November 2022 batch showcased a display on 25th July 2023. The aspiring interior designers explored the roots of design and its evolution, drawing inspiration from human history, ancient civilizations, and even period movies as part of the design ideology and history module.
Interior design is an art form that draws inspiration from a variety of sources. Integrating elements of the past into contemporary design not only adds an air of sophistication and exclusivity but also pays tribute to the wisdom and creativity of our ancestors.
Design ideology and history are important sources of information for interior design students. It forms the guiding principles that shape the historical context that influences the creative process and design development. The ideology drives innovation, user-centred spaces and sustainable solutions. A comprehensive study of influential design movements and their impact on contemporary interiors will help students improve their skills.
Tracing Design Ideology through Human Evolution
Interior design students demonstrated the evolution of design across human civilization. From the dawn of primitive dwellings to the elaborate dwellings of ancient civilizations, societal changes influenced architectural styles and design principles that persist today. Human needs, cultural values, and technological advances have shaped design ideologies for thousands of years.
The Timeless Allure of Ancient Civilizations:
Ancient civilizations such as Chinese, Egypt, Rome, Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley left an indelible mark on the world. Their art, architecture and culture have stood the test of time and continue to inspire us today. Incorporating elements of these civilizations into interior design brings ancient charm to contemporary spaces and promotes a connection between past and present.
Preserving Cultural Heritage:
Incorporating elements of ancient civilizations into interior design is a way of preserving cultural heritage. It keeps the spirit of these civilizations alive and relevant, ensuring that their contributions to art and design are not forgotten. By incorporating these elements into contemporary spaces, we become custodians of cultural heritage.
Balance of Old and New:
Integrating ancient design elements with modern interior architecture creates a harmonious balance between old and new. This shows how tradition can be seamlessly incorporated into modern living fabrics to create aesthetic and meaningful spaces.
Drawing Inspiration from Period Movies
Period movies are not only a source of entertainment; they also serve as a treasure trove of design inspiration. They are a valuable addition for interior design students to expand design knowledge, inspire creativity, and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between design and culture throughout history.
Diploma in Interior Design students beautifully showcased that the incorporation of elements from ancient civilizations and cultures into interior design is a testament to the timelessness of human creativity and ingenuity. As interior designers, we need to take inspiration from the past to not only create captivating spaces but to honour the collective heritage of humanity. Adopting this design ideology reminds us that our present is inextricably linked to our past, opening the door to a more culturally conscious and appreciative future.
