THOLU BOMMALU – THE ART OF TOGALU – JD Design Awards 2024

THE ART OF The idea was taken from leather puppetry, which we refer to as Tholu Bommalu of Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts. Puppets are prepared with goat leather and painted with locally made natural colour. It is in view to present Tholu Bommalata in this present format so that the traditional art gets preserved and promoted accordingly. To create a product or a visual presentation through which the cultural identity and detailed artistry of Tholu Bommalata can be reflected and, at the same time, viewed by a modern audience. It’s high-fashion street style wear for men/women in their 20s and 30s, and it has a modern silhouette.

ILLUSTRATIONS & BOARD

Integrating the ancient artistry of Tholu Bommalu into our street-style collection will indeed be a pretty bold mix of tradition and meeting modernity. Bringing in the vibrancy of Andhra Pradesh’s leather puppetry to urban fashion is paying homage to centuries of craftsmanship while embracing the dynamic energy of street culture. Each piece turns into a storyboard where detailed patterns and shapes blend with modern silhouettes, forming a visual tapestry that stirs the souls of its eclectic audience base. By mending the gap between heritage and street style, we not only fete the resilience of cultural traditions but also make it possible for a new generation to wear their roots with style and pride.

JDDA 2024

A modern fashion collection inspired by the traditional art of Tholu Bommalu is created by integrating ancient craftsmanship with modern aesthetic details to create unique artwear. The main concentration of our study has been on nature-related traditional motifs without divine characters so that it may be adopted and worn by any person. The clothing of this type can be worn not only by adults but by people of any age group. These are the crafts made out of hard goat leather, but we did this craft in fashion in flexible leather so that it can be wearable. This traditional art form and craft we took and brought this cultural thing into the fusion industry and converted it into street-style fashion.
