The Karmic Aura – JD Design Awards 2024

Goutham Kothari, a Diploma in Fashion Design student at JD Institute of Fashion Technology Bangalore, was inspired by Hindu beliefs in the never-ending cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation to develop his “Karmic Aura” collection, which won “The Unconventional Couture Award” at the JD Design Awards 2024 and goes deeper into the complex idea of “Samsara Stitches.” In this avant-garde collection, every garment  represents a stage of the change, with colors like black, crimson, and white symbolising blood, death, and the soul.

“Karmic Aura,” which draws inspiration from Jainism, focuses on how mental, verbal, and physical deeds affect the soul’s karmic field. The collection depicts the soul’s journey, beginning with its divine genesis and going through six stages of existence (Gods, Demi-Gods, Humans, Animals, Hungry Ghosts, and Hell Denizens). This conceptual basis is woven into ten meticulously crafted garments that move seamlessly from one step to the next. Using magnificent decorations and symbolic colours, “The Karmic Aura” encourages users to reflect on their lives and the impact of their activities on their spiritual advancement. The apparel in the collection is designed not only to adorn but also to empower the wearer, allowing for a greater connection with their personal and spiritual development.

This thematic collection, “The Karmic Aura,” envisions a future where humanity explores the mysteries of existence and cosmic order. In celestially inspired fabrics such as denim and cotton twill, the garments embody the essence of birth, death, and rebirth. Denim represents the birth theme of flexibility and adaptability. Just as denim changes with use, life begins anew with each cycle, evolving and evolving over time. On the other hand, the cotton-effect concept of death and rebirth reflects the permanence and cyclical cycle of karma. The twill fabric’s diagonal weave represents the ongoing journey of actions and consequences, highlighting the perpetual circle of life.

Goutham Kothari’s “The Karmic Aura” is more than just a fashion line; it is a philosophical investigation into the human experience through the lenses of Hindu and Jain beliefs. The collection, which combines spiritual notions with avant-garde fashion, encourages wearers to reflect on their karmic journey and embrace the transformational potential of self-awareness. This collection, created for men and women aged 20 and above, goes beyond seasonal trends to tell a timeless story of spiritual growth and cosmic connection.
