The 78th Independence Day of India was celebrated at the JD Institute of Fashion Technology with great exuberance and patriotic energy. It was events mounted and marked with vibrant expressions of tradition, unity, and creativity of a kind that bind in the free spirit and inspire generations to come and take the same free strides.

The celebrations started with the flag-hoisting ceremony. The most sober but at the same time inspiring moment was when everybody’s heart was filled with a sense of pride and, for sure, patriotism right through; it was our respected director, Ms. Sandra D’Souza, who had the great privilege and honor of unfurling the National Flag in front of us all to indicate the nation’s sovereignty and sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters. As the sun reddened and the flutter of the unfurled Tricolour in the breeze crept into everybody’s consciousness, the entire assembly got up to sing the National Anthem in chorus, their voices, in a real sense, crisscrossing the very diversity and consonance that it represents.

This was just the hoisting of the flag, and it was going to be only the opening ceremony to so many interesting cultural programs that got added with more and more colors and smiles of associations on the occasion. Our talented faculty members were gracing the occasion with their artistic cultural performances one after another, enacting their richness of varied cultural heritage from all over India.

The solo was so deeply soulful and responsive to the performance. The melodic voice of the singer pairs well with the lyrics—full of emotions and appreciation of the sacrifices made and the struggles that have been put forth—to pave our way to freedom. That was a perfect performance that put it out: real music has a way of making you feel and getting close to your background.

The energy of this event was helmed skyward by the further notched-up group dance-recital form in which dancers attired in clothing that is specific to their respective traditions presented a potpourri of various classical and folk Indian dances. The steps executed and the synchronized footwork were an absolute delight to the eyes and symbolized an aesthetic of oneness and unity in diversity.

Finally, to cap the cultural part of the proceedings, a majority of the faculty members sang a group performance. They had formed a choir that led in the singing of songs that were of a patriotic nature. Their voices came out very well in harmony, and their unity of purpose seemed to merge very well with the theme for the day. It appeared that unity was achieved only through the unison displayed by all the audience, which made the whole occasion very inclusive in celebrating our nation’s journey towards independence and progress.

So, Independence Day at JD Institute of Fashion Technology turned out to be a celebration of independence in our motherland and an introspection into the values residing within us: creativity, unity, and upholding heritage, lived and espoused each day. This is an event when the whole JD family stands together, getting integrated into that sense of community and mutual identity that is clearly and irrefutably laid down within this institution of ours.

The patriotic event was celebrated in the essence of all forms of freedom, be it of expression, creativity, or thought. In the JD Institute, we continue to give due importance to these very freedoms that allow students and faculty freedom for exploration, innovation, and contribution in bringing change to the changing landscape in the world of fashion and design.
