Tapovan Retreat Centre- A Tribute To Ibuku Architects
Dhuri Eesha Shubhajit, a student of JD School of Design, Goa pursuing her BSc in Interior Design showcased her project Tapovan Retreat Centre at JD Design Awards 2023- Goa edition.
The designer has grown up with her grandparents and has witnessed them facing issues like back pain, neck pain when they were growing old. She used to teach them basic yoga positions which can give them relief. But thinking about all the old people living in old age homes, she decided to design a retreat centre for a retired community home where they can practise yoga and meditation.
The designer studied the environment and decided to go for a retreat centre for them in the given area. She curated a space where they can interact with each other and can spend time in nature. Her inspiration is Ibuku architects who are into sustainable and eco friendly design. She has used bamboo as a main element in construction. Bamboo has a lot of environmental benefits- from its remarkably fast growth rate to its ability to regenerate on its own.
Due to its flexibility, strength, and tube-like shape, bamboo is an excellent disaster- and weather-resistant construction material. It is also light and convenient to move from one location to another. Compared to trees, it emits 35% more oxygen and absorbs 40% more carbon dioxide. Dhuri has also included mud flooring in her design. According to the designer, It is easy to construct and requires minimum skills labour. It also has good thermal insulation properties and also acts as sound-proofing material.
The colour palette of Tapovan Retreat Centre includes green, beige and earthy colours. Earthy colours are generally seen as friendly, warm, reassuring, comforting, and welcoming. Muted earth tones seem to have more of a calming effect as they are easy on the eyes. Earth tones are also seen as versatile and can pair well with any colour.
