Talk Session with RAK Ceramics: Interior Design Department
Sanitary-ware and flooring are an integral part of the Interior Design curriculum. To give the Interior Design students an overview and industry insight, we at JD Institute of Fashion Technology invited RAK Ceramics, the fourth largest manufacturer of tiles and sanitary ware in the world. Headquartered in the emirate of Ras Al Khamiah, the brand has the largest factory in Andhra Pradesh which strategically focuses on four sectors: tiles, bath ware, porcelain tableware, and faucets.
Mr. Edward Dayal Kumar, the area regional manager sanitary ware with an experience of 15 years in the same field touched upon the manufacturing process and technical specifications of sanitary ware. He also discussed the sanitary ware production: Tradition and Innovation along with a technical presentation of their products.
Since RAK Ceramics is one of the largest Ceramics brands in the world, the students also learned about the manufacturing process and technical specification of ceramic tiles by Mr. Deepak Nugehalli who is the Area Regional Manager ceramics with an experience of 9 years in the industry.
With this talk session, the students came to know some of the interesting facts such as the different materials have different water absorption capacities namely, vitrified tiles have 0.5%, Ceramic have between 3%-18% and Porcelain have 0.5%-3%. Apart from that the process of manufacture of tiles begins with the powder mineral fired for 45 minutes in a flame of 1100-degrees C followed by rectification and polishing. Also following tests are conducted for the tiles – breaking strength, water absorption, moisture expansion, scratching and tenacity test.
Overall, it was an informative session on what the company is, that left our Diploma in interior design students thorough with the processes and technicalities. They also had an opportunity to use their products in order for their upcoming projects.
