SWISS ARTIST AND DESIGNER CONDUCTS WORKSHOP FOR JD STUDENTS

JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore is collaborating with artist and fashion designer, Ms. Mariel Manuel to conduct workshops for the students from 11th – 15th November 2019, ahead of the upcoming Bengaluru By Design 19’. The institute is also the proud Education Partner for the design fest which will be held from 15th – 24th November 2019 at the Bangalore International Centre. A total of 25 students from Fashion Design and Interior Design Departments came forward to work on the installations for the design fest.

Day 1 of the workshop was an interactive learning experience, wherein Ms. Manuel introduced students to her design philosophy and creative journey along with an insight into her past and present work. She encouraged students to understand the materials before beginning to sketch, as this would provide them with a design direction. Sketching forms the next stage and should be treated as a way to document all ideas be it in form or even words. Once the idea took shape and the students had a clear vision of what they wanted to fashion out of the materials, they began working with vigour and enthusiasm.

Prior to Ms. Manuel’s visit, the students had collected various materials like plastic bottles, onions nets, nylon gunny sacks, fabrics, etc. which were then segregated colour wise. Inorder to maximize the work, the students were then divided into groups and assigned materials to translate waste into fashionable wear. Since, the core of Ms. Manuel’s work is based on sustainability, she advised them to minimize waste and incorporate every fragment into the design.

Through her workshop the designer wants to create a dialogue for the students by concentrating on repurposing waste by providing it with value added purpose. This collaborative effort brings to the fore, the core principle of sustainability championed by JD Institute of Fashion Technology to create conscious fashion.

Ms. Manuel comes with a strong design background, with experience in luxury fashion brands like Balenciaga and Paco Rabanne. The seed for her design ideology stemmed from witnessing the enormous wastage which was discarded without being repurposed due to repetition of materials. This led to the formation of her brand, Manuel Manufacturers which explores culture, textile and design by providing value to discarded materials. She creates one of a kind wearable textiles collected from her numerous visits to different parts of the world that reflects the culture and the environment of the place

Bengaluru By Design is a 10 days design festival that celebrates design focused initiative and captures diversity in design and creativity. A number of events have been lined up that will showcase the diverse design fields which can be accessed by people from all walks of life.
