Soil to Soul- Tribute to Clay Artists

Dhanashree Pratap Singh Rajput who is pursuing her BSc in Interior Design from JD School of Design was mesmerised by how a lump of clay can be converted into a beautiful sculpture. She witnessed it when her uncle and brother, who are great sculptors, were working. Hence, came the project Soil to Soul.

The designer showcased her project Soil to Soul at JD Design Awards 2023 Goa edition. She curated a makerspace for the potters and clay artists. The makerspace is going to be constructed in the form of a dome and the texture of limewash is used for the walls. The main purpose of creating the makerspace is to bring back the concept of children playing outside and reducing screen time. This gives an opportunity for parents also to associate with kids and spend time with them outdoors while enjoying nature in the best possible manner. Moreover, it is also an opportunity for creating employment for the local goa craftsmen who can learn different techniques and attend programmes on traditional goan crafts.

The space also aims to bring awareness to the forgotten craftsmanship and helps in developing skills like hand-eye coordination, problem solving and creativity.

Summarising its construction, the dome is being made by using waste materials including plastic bottles, mud, clay, and straw that are bundled into polypropylene bags called ‘Eco Bags’. Terracotta-based air conditioning system is utilised where water is passed from the front of terracotta pots that are connected to one another by aluminium frames. Fans on the backside help to bring down the interior temperature. To give the effects of simplicity, tranquillity, modernism, comfort the colour beige which soothes, relaxes, inspiers, and encourages you is being used.

Soil to Soul is a place that altogether with its unique design and colours creates a great space for kids and adults to spend some quality time together outdoors enjoying nature. It also gives them the learning of associating and socialising with other kids. The designer Dhanashree Pratap Singh Rajput also received the Best Thesis of the Year award for her extraordinary project Soil to Soul.

“My aim was to design a makerspace with clay and construct it using eco-bags. The experience of working on this project for JDDA 2023 was very nice and I learnt a lot about the constructions and different materials.”
