SKL Exports – Industry Visit by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Cochin
Students from the fashion designing department of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Cochin, visited SKL Exports, Tirupur one of the leading garment exporting firms in Tamil Nadu. The visit was organised as part of the fashion design industrial visit. The purpose of the industrial visit is to educate the students about the concerned industry and its operational process.
During the visit, the students were guided by the Senior Merchandising Manager of SKL Exports who gave them a brief about the organisation. They were then given a demonstration of the CAD software, pattern plotter and pattern cutter. The students were taken to their sampling unit, which houses different types of sewing machines and footers used for different purposes.
They were also given an opportunity to look at the printing facility, wherein the manager explained the making of screens in software and the process of developing the screens. A demonstration was given on how the print is transferred on to the fabric. Detailed explanation was given on the various lab tests done to assure the quality of the print and fabric.
The production was explained by showing the students different types of greige fabric available in the factory. They were also provided demonstration on the method of identifying defects at the fabric stage, automatic fabric layering and cutting. Line production of one style of kid’s wear was shown along with explanation.
Apart from the visit to SKL Exports, the students were also taken to a local clothing market – Khaderpet, Tiruppur. The visit was detailed and informative wherein the students were able to observe the various processes and stages involved in making garments. This gave them an overview of the working of the factory and merchandising process.
