Cleantha Crasto, a student of JD School of Design, Goa pursuing her BSc. in Interior Design showcased her project ‘Saudade Biophilia’ at JD Design Awards 2023. The word ‘biophilia’, which means ‘love of living things’, is actually Greek. Edward O Wilson, a Harvard scientist, coined the phrase. In 1993, Wilson collaborated with the social ecologist Stephen R Kellert to write the book ‘The Biophilia Hypothesis’. They maintained that because our biological make-up can only completely grow when we are focused on life and life-like activities. He believed that we are biologically related to nature and emotionally drawn to the natural world. 

Designer Cleantha Crasto drew inspiration from the calmness of nature, as spending time in nature can help improve memory and also de-stresses people. The project aims to design an ADHD clinic using biophilic designs inculcating the calmness of nature that will help in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being to humans. ADHD or Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder is an issue which often goes unaddressed. The individuals with ADHD show inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity which through therapies can be treated.
