Royal Rhapsody: A Tribute to Raja Ravi Varma
Royal Rhapsody was designed by Anugraha A and Santhwana John Kaitharath, students of BSc. in Fashion and Apparel Design at JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru for JD Design Awards 2023. Through their collection the young fashion designers paid tribute to legendary painter and artist Raja Ravi Varma. He is recognised as one of the best artists in Indian art history. He was the first Indian artist to combine Indian sensibility with European realism. He drew inspiration for his paintings from Sanskrit epics, Kathakali dance plays, and Vedic hymns. He was particularly known for turning his paintings into lithographs and priced it reasonably for the general people, which significantly increased his audience and influence as a painter. Varma’s lithographs helped define common people’s tastes in art and enhanced their involvement with fine arts. The artist meticulously considered small details, such as clothing and jewellery, which gave his paintings depth and realism. The fashion collection – Royal Rhapsody was way of expressing artistic inspiration mixed with majestic qualities and also describes a luxurious experience that blends styles and eras. It signifies a creative collection that blends elements of grandeur, elegance and emotional depth. By implementing block printing, the designers have attempted to depict the finer elements in paintings.
