Products of Discomfort | JD Annual Design Awards 2019
This JD Annual Design Awards 2019, we had freshers from Interior Design Department who showcased their creativity at the exhibition based on the concept; Products of Discomfort.
It has been always believed that every uncomfortable product design is indicating failure of a designer although it is aesthetically pleasing for the customers. This thought is clearly killing the young minds and JD Institute of Fashion Technology believes that it is the time to deconstruct and recalibrate those rules.
With manipulating the key characteristic of some of the daily design objects, and without applying any design rules and principles, which is used or applied in any given space is a new concept. Breaking the conventional ways of comfortable designs is something which inspired our students to come up with the products of discomfort. The chair designed by Anusha, Kannan, and Soujanya with weird armrest and the hollow rod is designed in such a way that it’s excruciating to the users.
The unstable legs with semi-circular wheels, coconut shells for cushioning, beer bottles as a backrest, high armrest designed by Manikandan and Mohd Buhari is uncomfortable for the users in many ways. A Wine Rack which unable to balance the bottle by Tejaswini and Pooja and the different size of blades in a fan designed by Akash, Anush, and Manoj are abnormal yet uncomfortable at the same time.
When it comes to the discomfort bed, the JEDIIIANS Bharath MG and Jinendra Jain designed Single Bed with varieties materials causing discomfort. The Plate Rack design with irregularities which tends to damage the vessels by Avinash and Sivakumar is another creativity which ripe off the conventional yet comfortable designs.
The students showed how an uncomfortable product design can turn into something aesthetically pleasing and how it could affect the product from being used or applied in any given space.
