The students of Visual Merchandising Weekend Batch 2019 had put up a display on August 24th 2019 under the guidance of Ms. Suma Satish, Academics in-charge. The display was a part of their module Elements and Principles of Design in Fashion.
Visual Merchandising, as the name suggests is a visual medium, used to create curiosity on what is on offer in a particular store. The display on the window of a store needs to capture potential buyers and every retail outlet, tries to put their best foot forward, by creating innovative designs, colour schemes and themes based on what they are offering.
Elements and Principles of Design in Fashion, includes lines, shapes, colours, texture, space, value, contrast, balance, movement, repetition, rhythm, proportion, unity, variety etc. respectively.
Hence, the students were asked to create miniature models of window displays, based on these principles along with the products on offer, name of the brand, colour schemes, themes and logo.
The display was put up by 3 groups. It highlighted the name of their respective chosen brand, colour schemes, logo, etc. The themes centred on various topics, wherein one group used lines for their brand and created a display that incorporated lines in white and blue colour scheme. Whilst another group used the romanticism of Valentine’s day and used the concept of Cinderella for their brand, with the colour red dominating the scheme. Another group was inspired by the Fall/Winter 2019 colours and based their garment collection and window display on the theme.
