The collection Malefic presented at the JD Design Awards 2022 was curated by the designers: Prarthana J, Priyanka Vikram and Prerana T K who are pursuing their PG Diploma in Fashion Design and Business Management. Malefic is an Avant Garde collection about the resurrection of the incident of Australian bush fire. Their inspiration and concept are Australian bushfires. It’s a disaster which keeps happening in Australia year wise. In 2019 and 2020 the disaster again happened which due to its unusual intensity, size, duration and uncontrollable dimension is considered a mega fire but because of covid people was not aware of it so the designer decided to give awareness to people that the disaster did happen and most of the animals and the whole forest in Australia was affected. The silhouette of their collection is inspired by the cause of this mega fire. Jute fabric with a tinge of bright colours has been implemented in their collection.
Their collections have a story that is from soil to green leaves and the green leaves have different shades of green and then those leaves turning into dry leaves catching fire. The collections have a lot of patches in between the garments and it also shows some burnt areas with skeletons which they are depicting with the metal mesh. From the fire there is smoke and after everything is destroyed in fire only the ash and skeleton are left which was shown using black ruffles and metal mesh, says the designers. The collection “Malefic” is about bringing awareness of the Australian bush fire 2019 with a statement of nature’s creativity.
