Lens, Lights, in Action!

Lens and lighting are two vital aspects of photography. The lens of a camera focuses the light in a manner that befits finesse of the image. On the other hand, it is the lighting which helps the lens focus, improves the clarity, and adjusts the luminosity.

In the world of photography, the lens is the distance between a good view and a good image. It holds a place of great significance in photography. Only a good lens will give you that perfect image that you long to capture. The lens of a camera is structured as a framework of numerous shaped glass that tends to refract the light in a certain manner, and as a composite element coupled with magnification and aperture, it creates an impact on the sharpness of the image.

Lighting is a fundamental pre-requisite of a good image. Technically, the better the lighting conditions, the finer the image obtained. Therefore, it is important to control and manipulate the lighting in such a manner that you have the finest exposure, texture, hue, and tint. The play of light and shadow can be created only with proper lighting.

The science of photography is all about balancing proper lighting with a good lens. Good lighting, when combined with a good lens, promises a miracle image. If you have a decent amount of lighting, in order to get a shallow depth of the field, you may use a lower aperture lens. It is interesting to note that lens and lighting together determine the quality of an image. A good lens should be sharp and focus accurately, to enable the maximum utilisation of available lighting. Lighting should also be adjusted in accordance with the requirement of the field of view.

There are numerous kinds of lens available with different focal lengths. The higher the focal length, the wider the angle and larger the aperture, the lighter it can capture. There are zoom lenses, ultra-wide lenses, wide angle lenses, and macro lenses to name a few.

Professional photography is largely dependent on light. Natural lighting is always an option but with enhanced lighting kits storming the market, you will be able to have a more intense image. Front light and back light have to be adequately taken care of. You may also choose between a wide light or a narrow one and a hard or a soft light depending on the requirement of the focus of your image. Some photographers prefer natural lighting over artificial sources, however, artificial lighting is more even and steady. You may also choose combined lighting, a technique that makes use of both natural and artificial lighting.

Both, lens as well as lighting are independent of each other, yet the co-existence of both is vital for good photography and videography, and both counterbalance each other in a subtle manner. Lighting and lens should complement each other in accordance with the need of the photographer. Adjusting the lighting and the lens will give you the perfect angle and field of view. In order to create sharp and detailed images with an impact, you can play with the lens and lighting to create magic. Great photography is an art of high order and creative endeavour.
