KIMCHI & KOI – A Fusion Restaurant – JD Design Awards 2024

Irin Jose, a Diploma student in Interior Design, won the Best Overall Project at the JD Design Awards 2024 in Kochi for her outstanding work on “Kimchi & Koi,” a Japanese-Korean fusion restaurant. This project, which will be constructed in Thrissur, Kerala, is a testament to Irin’s ability to blend cultural aesthetics with modern design principles. “Kimchi & Koi” draws inspiration from both Korean and Japanese cultural elements, creating a dining environment that reflects the simplicity, elegance, and natural beauty of these traditions. The restaurant’s design features a carefully curated color palette, natural materials, and traditional decorative elements, all thoughtfully adapted to suit the Kerala climate while honoring the rich heritage of Korean and Japanese design.

The primary objective of Irin’s project is to create a dining space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also culturally authentic, offering a harmonious blend of Korean and Japanese influences. The design incorporates sustainable and locally sourced materials, ensuring environmental responsibility and cost-effectiveness. Elements such as hanji paper partitions, wooden lattice patterns, tatami mats, and shoji screens are integrated into the design to evoke a serene and balanced atmosphere. The color scheme, inspired by traditional Korean hanbok and Japanese interiors, uses soft greens, warm reds, and natural wood tones to create a warm, inviting ambiance. These design choices are complemented by modern touches, ensuring the space is accessible and appealing to a broad audience.

Adapting these cultural influences to the local context of Thrissur, Kerala, Irin’s design utilizes materials like teak, bamboo, and terracotta, which not only support sustainability but also enhance the project’s durability and relevance to the local climate. The fusion of Korean and Japanese aesthetics, combined with the use of locally sourced materials, creates a unique and immersive dining experience. By seamlessly blending traditional elements with contemporary design, “Kimchi & Koi” offers a culturally rich yet modern environment, celebrating the beauty of cultural fusion and providing diners with a truly distinctive culinary journey.
