Kerala Gem and Jewelry Show (KGJS)

The Jewellery Design students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Cochin attended “The Kerala Gem and Jewellery Show (KGJS)” held at Adlux International Convention and Exhibition Center, Ernakulam, Cochin.

The KGJS is trade platform that brings together India’s top jewellery manufacturers and technology service providers. They showcase their latest designs and products to retailers, wholesalers, dealers, designers and delegates from related fields, from India and overseas.

The show was a learning ground for the students. They were able to gain knowledge of practical manufacturing, designing, casting, mining process, workshop tools, workshop machines, machines used in jewelry, casting, dying, enameling etc. They also got to observe modern and technique sensitive equipment used in designing.

Like every other industry, jewellery making procedures have also undergone advancement. In the past,   jewellery designs were preserved using mold making procedures. Today, the designs are saved in a computer file which contains the artwork in order to regrow them in the future. Through CAD, skilled artisans create original models in a virtual world. Once completed, their works are refined with high tech equipment driven by complex software.

Platforms like these which bring industry experts from different parts of the world, are instrumental in understanding about different practices and techniques used by them. It also broadens one’s understanding on what is on offer in other parts of the world and different mediums of making jewellery. This further helped the students to interact with them and build contacts.
