Earlier story narration was the ambitious mission of painting. Series by series, Renaissance Artists portrayed the life of Christ and the Saints on the wall of churches. Michelangelo presented the gloom and terror of ‘The Last Judgement’ across the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This gave rise to portray art as a message. In today’s era, the drive towards narration or art in the form of fascinated stories has resurfaced often in videos or through installations. This inspired students to discuss the content and bring out their imagination into reality. We at JD Institute of Fashion Technology believe that appreciating art helps one to think and express effectively. As a part of the orientation programme, the B.sc Fashion design course students witnessed few artworks and 3d forms at Chitrakala Parishadh.

Knowing how art can be used as a mode of expression and on account of National Youth Skill Day; jediiians were assigned a dynamic, challenging project where they had to create a 3D display that depicts a message. The project involved ideating for and conceptualizing an installation with the recyclable materials. The intention behind this was to use resources effectively and initiate towards a sustainable future.

Creativity dwelled from one corner to the other, as student’s pointed out societal norms, women empowerment and revived the fashion in India. One side of the corner featured a darkened space with a glowing mask, talking about the life of a runway model. With this installation, students addressed the journey and drawbacks a model faces throughout her life in the form a digital projection. The glow of the mask suggests the glitz and glamour of the profession whereas the projection suggested the inner side of it.

To the left, students showcased the concern towards women. The safety of woman and girl power is the recent matters which are necessary to be looked upon. Considering the #Me too campaign of the society and suggesting power to women, students showcased a shield made out of scrap metal and a dummy with wings made out of waste newspapers.

Whereas in the opposite side of the corner, students built a model of half and half faces of men on one side and women on another. The cards depicted information about the emergence of Indian Fashion from Vedic period till current trends. The idea behind it was to create awareness among people regarding the origin of fashion in India through several cultures and its existence today for both men and women.

In this process, students were exposed to challenges of doing research, sourcing and execution of the art itself. They explored various recycled materials such as cardboards, newspapers, stitched fabrics etc. It was a great learning experience for the students to let their creative juices flow and create phenomenal installations which later led to an exhibition in the end.
