JD ANNUAL DESIGN AWARDS 2016 – UNTOLD STORIES – DEPT. OF INTERIOR DESIGN – BY SAMPRITH AND AISHWARYA – INSPIRED BY SORUBARAJA
Sorubaraja is the third generation handicrafts artist from the city of Thiruchirapalli. He works with different varieties of wood, Burma Teakwood being the prime material. The tools used by him are a family heirloom, which have been passed on by the previous generation artists. His aim in life is to expand his work to a larger scale and develop his career further. Amongst the artist’s works, the designers were mainly drawn to the fish jigsaw puzzle. It inspired them as it functioned both as a puzzle and a storage unit. They tried to incorporate this art work with another puzzle called ‘The Tangram’ which is a Chinese puzzle consisting of seven geometrical pieces. The highlight of the Tangram is that you can arrive at almost 1500 simple to complex combinations with the seven pieces. The designers have blended the artist’s work with the Tangram to arrive at a combined product of the Chinese puzzle with storage. The product is a low rise coffee/dining table with inset Tangram-jigsaw puzzle. Their inspiration was unconventional and perfectly fit into the concept to create a distinctive category of ‘Art Oriented Furniture’.
