Green Buildings are the new and widely used method of constructing materials without causing harm to the environment. Green building can be defined as a building in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates the negative impacts and creates positive impacts, on the climate and environment. Green buildings preserve precious natural resources and improve the quality of living.
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) which is a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001 with the vision ‘To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025’. The council offers a wide range of services including the development of new green building rating programmes, certification services and green building training programmes. Along with these services, the council also organises the ‘Green Building Congress’, which is an annual flagship event on Green Buildings.
The council is committee-based, member-driven, and consensus-focused. Almost all the stakeholders of the construction industry are architects, developers, product manufacturers, corporate, government, academia, and nodal agencies that participate in the council activities through various initiatives. The IGBC has an initiative called the ‘Chapters’ with the motive of reaching green building awareness on a regional level. The agenda of the ‘Local Chapters’ is:
- Faster penetration and reach
- To reach out to the wider section of stakeholder
- Involve local agencies and institutions in the green building movement
They have these ‘Local Chapters’ spread across the nation in various cities. The new chapter that was initiated was the ‘Student Chapter’ in 2021. The ‘Student Chapter’ is to reach out to aspiring students in the field of construction and home designing, and bring to their knowledge the aim and vision of ‘Green Building’.
JD Institute Of Fashion Technology Bengaluru is now a proud part of the ‘Student Chapter’ with IGBC. The launch had taken place on the 22nd of September 2021 at the Brigade Road campus between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Post Ms. Angeline’s warm welcome, Ms. Sandra was requested to share a brief journey of JD Institute along with her gratitude and excitement regarding the launch of ‘Student Chapter’, followed by Mr. Pramod Adhikari who shared about the academic benefits that this initiative will shower upon the current and prospective students of JD Institute in the coming years.
After the launch, Ms. Sandhya had presented to the students a powerpoint presentation about the benefits and advantages of the Green Building concept not only for the environment but also for the client.
Green buildings are the way to a greener future. Using resources that are available to us in nature as well as help in reducing wastage that is caused during the construction process. At JD Institute, the students are taught and guided to creating and designing with sustainable materials, with minimum wastage that will not cause any landfills or harm to the environment. To achieve this on an industrial level, the students are given multiple chances to interact with industrialists in their field of study.
