Gold is a precious metal and has had a high value since prehistoric times and was used as a symbol of value, purity and royalty. It is the most malleable metal known allowing it to be worked with, pounded and shaped without breaking. The price of gold has risen over the years indicating how it is valued in society.
Gold is also one of the few commodities that was also used as a currency by many countries. Although the gold standard has long since been abandoned, it is still very effectively used as an asset in times of economic turmoil to preserve wealth.
When using gold for jewellery, it is measured in karats. Pure gold is 24K and is generally sold as 22K, 18K and 14K. Since gold is too soft, it is always added with other metals like silver or copper to provide strength and colour. Adding other metals to gold allows to create exotic colours. For example, adding copper gives a redder colour, iron bluer, platinum white, aluminum creates purple.
Gold is a good conductor of electricity and heat; it does not tarnish or oxidize. Heat, moisture and corrosives have very little chemical effect on gold. This makes it well-suited to make coins and jewellery.
Commonly we find the use of gold in jewellery making. Jewellery designers create beautiful gold jewellery which sometimes are enhanced with diamonds and gemstones. Gold and diamond jewellery make for wonderful presents. In our society they are also used for wedding rings and in gift giving.
Gold is also used in various other forms such as:
- Embroidery thread
- In computers, jet aircraft
- Dental crowns and bridges
- White gold can substitute for platinum
