Elements of fashion design are the components that define the design and making of fashion. By understanding the various elements, a fashion designer will be able to pay attention to the way he is designing clothes and the aspects of his making that define his creation. The various elements of fashion design are as follows:
Colour
Different colours hold different meanings and they have the ability to enhance the look of a garment. Colours form an important part of fashion design practice by attaching attention to the garment or to details of the garment. Colours also enhance the look of the wearer; dark colours making the wearer look thinner and taller as well as elegant and sophisticated. By understanding colour psychology, using colour enables one to create and wear garments that suit them.
Silhouette
Silhouette is the outline of a fashion garment. It is the shape of the garment without considering the details and the patterns. Different silhouettes suit various people based on their body type and shape. A fashion designer needs to understand the relationship between a silhouette and a body, and they need to determine which silhouettes will compliment which body types. They should also be able to determine what kind of silhouette suits individual persons.
Line
The deconstruction of a garment shows that there are many lines in a garment. Lines can take the shapes of the pattern making of the garment, the seam lines, the hem of the garment as well as the neckline, the length of the sleeves and so on. Line in a fashion garment acts as guidelines for the making of fashion garment as well as in providing direction for the movement of the eye. The manipulation of lines determines the shape that the fabric takes and in determining its silhouette, as well as the amount of raw material it requires.
Texture
The surface of a garment will have textures; it is the property of the fabric or any other material that the garment is made with. In fashion design, the texture of the material is retained unless it is manipulated. Texture can take the form of trims, fabric manipulation, details such as fastening or any other decorations or ornamental features such as embroidery. Textures enhance the quality of the garment and add design value to it. Texture can also take the form of the woven or knitted construction of a plain fabric.
Draping
Draping is the art of moulding the fabric or any other material used for fashion construction on the body. The way fabrics react by itself and when it is worn on the human body differs based on various factors such as the elasticity and fluidity of the fabric. The more fluid the fabric, higher its ability to drape more to the body. Draping determines the silhouette as well as the way a garment looks on the wearer. Understanding draping can enable a fashion designer to create well-balanced forms as well as in creating a fashion collection that is informed by the body types of the wearer.
Elements of fashion design do not work independently but collectively in order to determine how a fashion garment looks and take shape. These elements are the main aspects of a fashion design practice that determine the main visual appeal as well as the way it adorns the wearer. Other elements such as textile print and textile pattern also affect the way fashion garments look but they complement these main elements. JD Institute of Fashion Technology provides a fashion design course in Bangalore that prepares students with the ability to develop a fashion collection that not only enables them to understand the nuances of fashion, but create designs that are well-informed by a deep understanding of the practice.
