The eclectic decor is the nineteenth and twentieth-century architectural style which means the décor compromising a mixture of textures, time periods, styles, trends, and colours. It uses the elements from multiple philosophies, texts and life experiences. It may include decorative motives, distinct historical ornament, furniture, traditional cultural motifs, structural features or styles from other countries. It is a combination of diverse styles and periods.
The main driving force behind eclecticism was the harnessing of historic styles to create something original and new. Eclecticism emerged in Europe coming out of France’s Beaux Arts style and Britain’s Victorian architecture where designers were encouraged to explore their expressive and creative freedom. The rise in eclectic architecture resulted in the emergence of Interior Decoration as a regarded profession. Eclecticism in design came into practice during the late 19th century. Through the influence of Antiochus of Ascalon, Platonism made the transition from New Academy scepticism to Eclecticism.
A deliberate colour palette unites the mix of styles and genres. Some neutral colours are used to tie all the elements together. The furniture can have texture, lines or be plane depending upon one’s choice but the multitude of fabric partly defines the eclectic look. Antique and modern furniture, artefacts from different countries, and art collections are grouped together to create interest. It is important to keep the final look cohesive as eclecticism is about creating a look of controlled chaos. Top Interior Designers who can pull off the Eclectic style well are Jennifer Adams, author of Love Coming Home, interior designer Rita Konig and mid-century modern furniture company Joybird.
Every form of art has a unique significance and beauty. Eclecticism in interior design is a path towards discovering new styles and development in creativity. It enhances the chances of creation and encourages the mind to work more innovatively.
