Ashlyn Rodrigues, a student of JD School of Design, Goa pursuing her BSc. in Fashion and Apparel Design showcased her collection, ‘Beyond the Catch,’ at JD Design Awards 2023. The young designer won Best Sustainable Collection award for her work which paid tribute to the fishermen who fight the elements of nature to bring fresh catch. Her main source of inspiration was her father who is part of the fishing community.
Having witnessed the early morning routines of the community first-hand, the young designer wanted to provide an insight into their lives. With the course of time the profession is no longer viewed as economically viable for everyone involved due to pollution and over fishing. Some from the community have to resort to working in the harbour as daily wage labourers. However, despite these hardships the fishermen who continue with the profession return to the sea every day with the same vigour and enthusiasm. This passion for their work also keeps the culture alive.
The collection visually represents the connection between the fishermen and the sea. White and blue were the dominant colours of the garments which were embellished with seashells and pearls with complementing accessories. The fabrics used for the garments were pieces that had been rejected by the industry and was being sold by the meter in wholesale outlets. The types of fabrics used for the collection included white soft net, blue-dyed cotton knitted net, blue and white velvet, blue and white Lycra, and white. The colour blue is associated with depth, loyalty, wisdom, faith, and intelligence. Whereas, white colour is associated with cleanliness, freshness, simplicity, tranquillity and also stands for innocence or purity.
Beyond the Catch is targeted for men and women belonging to the age group from 20 years to 30 years.
