Stepping into a world of creativity exposes one’s minds to new ideas and perspectives which are later translated into reality. Over time, the way JD Institute of Fashion Technology welcome the students is getting more and more refined and improvements are brought about every year. For the recent B.Sc batch in Fashion Design, the orientation towards the Introduction of Art was brought in by a pet project under the mentorship of their faculty – Mr. Uday Raj. The project revolved around ideation and conceptualization for creating an installation with just one material to work upon. The intention of using one prime material is to inculcate the habit of using resources judiciously to create anything and work towards a sustainable future. The batch was divided into groups who worked collectively towards achieving one common goal.
No Tree City
Focusing on the extensive deforestation, the students decided to take an initiative by creating a city space made of wood. “No Tree City” is an abstract version of a city which is highly crowded and made up of wood. The reason the young minds decided to construct a city and not something else is that of the garden city of India – Bangalore is now a victim. A study by the Karnataka state pollution board (KSPCB) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) has found that vegetation in Bangalore has decreased by 66% in the last 40 years. The green cover ratio has reduced to 0.1 trees per person whereas the ideal ratio is 1 tree per person.
Be what you want to be
Inspired by real-life experiences and thoughts that circle around life-changing experiences, the students decided to depict the purity and beauty of their imaginations through a wall illustration. Breaking the stereotypes of acceptance by the society, the students have portrayed the flow of unadulterated thoughts without any barrier. With no regard to society’s thoughts and judgements, we should believe in fulfilling our dreams and follow our thoughts to a world of creativity and magic. Using foam sheet as the primary component, the flowers in the wall art represent the students who are budding flowers and here to make the world an unconventional place to live in.
A Weavers Language
Uplifting the status of skilled craftsmen in our country has always been a challenge. Weavers and artists fall under the category of a neglected sector. With an aim towards diverting the attention towards artistic abilities of hand-woven craftsmanship, the students have used fabric and quotes by weavers and artists. Stripping fabric into long and slim strips and weaving them together with thick cotton thread and cutouts of quotes on a frame loom brought together the idea of the importance of textiles and hand-woven installation pieces. The wall hanging portrays the importance of weavers and their skill in the fashion industry.
Marilyn Monroe Reincarnation
Fascinated by style and fashion, the students attempted a portrait of the ‘Diva of Fashion’ – Marilyn Monroe. The portrait installation is composed of cardboard. As an ode to the icon, the students have tried to bring in the uniqueness through their work and through the only material used.
