‘Abstractism’– An exhibition by B.Sc. Interior Design Students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore

‘‘The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul.’’

The quote above tells us about the kind of dedication and commitment that goes into creating something beautiful and that’s what the Interior students of the Lavelle Road campus of JD Institute of Fashion Technology did on 31st of March, 2015. They put up an artistically creative art exhibit where the theme was ‘Abstractism’. Titled, “Abstraction and conceptualization of images”- an exhibition organized by the interior design students saw some powerful forms of abstract art. Most often abstract art is misunderstood but that ironically, is the beauty of it. Exhibits of abstract art are definitely spurting and the artists are seen painting their interpretations of what they see.

Magnificent is not the word that described the art exhibit that was put up by the Interior students. Creativity was the order of the day, right from concept based paintings like Pillars to Success, Inspiration from Nature, Waste material CD’s, Sunsets, we witnessed it all. The whole idea was to bring about Simplification in Abstract Art and how it’s all about looking at things around us differently. We were pretty much surprised to know that simple things like butter paper ,broomsticks and cycle spokes were used to enhance their concepts ,to be honest we were expecting more complicated things.Abstractism - An exhibition by - Interior Design Students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology 3

Geometrical shapes and recycled materials were mostly used for the exhibition. An art form using triangles and squares were made of cycle spokes. Bulbs were rolled with butter sheets and a chair was made out of waste wooden pieces. CDs were painted black and hung on the wall asymmetrically which created a nice form in itself and added a different perspective.Abstractism - An exhibition by - Interior Design Students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology 4

The paintings contained extraordinary freedom and revealed the artist’s attitudes and feelings towards the work. Art and paintings inspired from various elements were displayed, although nature and social issues played a major role. There was a story behind every emotion and the artists had carefully chosen every drop of paint to evoke a certain feeling and express a certain mood and attitude.Abstractism - An exhibition by - Interior Design Students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology 9

Old newspapers were used extensively to create beautiful pieces of art. Home interiors, a board inspired by Egypt and various textures of interiors with geometric shapes were created using cardboards and papers. The 3D forms of abstract structures of buildings created by the students completely stole the show.

The Photography section had powerful themes attached to it and each picture had a different story to tell. Conceptual photography had various emotions expressed in the form of Dance by capturing expressions of a dancer, Friendship through the use of hands, Nature by showing coffee plantations and breath taking photographs of morning, Addiction in life was depicted through pictures of phones, drugs, food, makeup, gadgets etc, Rituals was shown through Hindu traditions during weddings, Evil showed the world is taken over by negativity and evils , Innocence was depicted through childhood, Passion through collection of coins from around the world and Teenage had photographs talking about studies, addiction and friends.

The next interesting thing that we witnessed was the ‘Stop Motion’ concept where photos are merged together with the same background. Stop motion an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object or persona appear to move on its own was used very creatively to make videos to create awareness on social causes. Random videos like breakfast, the rubik cube, dolphins, gambling, traffic jams, safety for girls were shown to us which were very interesting to watch. The whole idea was to make us understand that how simple concepts can be relevant and impactful. A creative experience all in all and there was a lot to take back from this art exhibit which was filled with the works of talented artists. If we could describe it in one word we would say Mind-blowing, but then again there’s always more to art, something that words can’t describe.
