Embrace – JD Design Awards 2024

Rachel Erica Correya, a Diploma student of Fashion Design curated The fashion collection “Embrace”, draws its inspiration from a profound revolt against traditional beauty standards. In a world often fixated on extremist beauty standards are often characterized by unrealistic and unattainable ideals that can significantly impact individuals’ self-esteem, mental health, and behavior. These standards are perpetuated by various societal influences, including media, fashion, and cultural norms, and can lead to various harmful consequences. “Embrace” finds beauty in the diverse spectrum of human beauty, celebrating the distinct features that make each person unique. Rather than concealing perceived flaws, the collection highlights them as distinctive attributes to be cherished. Scars, birthmarks, asymmetry, and other so-called imperfections are not flaws to be hidden, but rather, they are the very essence of individuality and character. The collection envisions to showcase all these so-called imperfections and the true beauty which lies within them.

ILLUSTRATIONS & BOARD

The colors chosen for this collection—wine, dark blue, and black—are rich and intense, symbolizing the depth and complexity of the human spirit. Wine represents the richness of experiences, dark blue the calm and depth of self-awareness, and black the strength and mystery within each person. Together, these colors create a powerful palette that speaks to the strength and beauty found in embracing one’s true self. The fabric choice for this collection is poly viscose fiber with satin matte finish, having an elegance and flow to the fabric. The fabrics used also are conscientiously chosen in order to respond well to texturing techniques.
