SWARA – Music Experience Center – JD Design Awards 2024
Kiran Mariat Saji, a Master’s student in Interior Design, recently won the prestigious Best Concept award at the JD Design Awards 2024 held in Kochi. Her award-winning project, “Swara,” is a Music Experience Center in Kochi, Kerala, designed to immerse visitors in the world of music through an engaging and aesthetically captivating environment. The design concept, which features a thematic approach centered on curves and a warm palette of browns and beiges, showcases Kiran’s innovative vision and deep understanding of creating spaces that resonate both visually and aurally. The center includes intricate details such as partition walls, false ceilings, and wooden wall panels, culminating in a dedicated performance space that serves as a versatile venue for live events.
Drawing inspiration from the cultural and natural landscape of Kerala, Kiran’s design for the Music Experience Center emphasizes the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials. Bamboo, reclaimed wood, and bendable plywood are integral to the design, not only enhancing the aesthetic appeal but also reinforcing the center’s connection to the environment. The use of curves throughout the space is particularly significant, creating a fluid and immersive environment where visitors can experience music in a way that is both visually and auditorily enriching. The earthy tones of browns and beiges, inspired by the Kerala landscape, add warmth and invite visitors to feel at home, making the center a true reflection of the region’s natural beauty.

Beyond its visual and auditory appeal, Kiran’s design for the Music Experience Center is also a celebration of community and cultural heritage. The layout of the center is designed to encourage interaction, with spaces that flow seamlessly into each other, guided by the curved design elements. The performance space, with its curved seating arrangements, fosters a sense of shared experience and connection through music. By integrating acoustic panels, lighting, and sustainable materials thoughtfully, Kiran Mariat Saji has created a space that not only celebrates music but also honors the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
