SEHEJ ⠠⠠⠎⠑⠓⠑⠚⠠⠄ TRAINING CENTER FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED – JD Design Awards 2024
Aswani Krishna R, a Diploma student in Interior Design, was awarded Best Presentation at the JD Design Awards 2024 in Kochi for her exceptional project “Sehej” — a Visually Impaired Training Center in Trivandrum. This project is thoughtfully designed to create an inclusive, accessible, and functional environment tailored to the needs of visually impaired individuals. By integrating universal design principles, color theory for accessibility, wayfinding strategies, and modern minimalism, Sehej ensures a seamless and intuitive experience for all users. The center includes essential spaces such as a reception area, classrooms, a library, a cafe, and washrooms, all centered around a landscaped seating area with an open roof that brings in natural light and fosters a sense of openness.
The primary objective of Sehej is to foster an environment that promotes independence, learning, and well-being for visually impaired individuals. This is achieved through the thoughtful incorporation of tactile pathways, high-contrast colors, Braille signage, and auditory cues, all of which aid in navigation and usability. The design goes beyond functionality, creating an aesthetically pleasing space that supports the emotional and psychological well-being of its users. The intuitive layout minimizes obstacles, allowing easy and stress-free movement throughout the space.

Sehej sets a new benchmark for inclusive design in training facilities by emphasizing both accessibility and community engagement. The project includes spaces dedicated to recreational activities, social interactions, and cultural events, fostering a strong sense of belonging among users, their families, and caregivers. By blending functionality with modern minimalism, the center offers a calm, organized atmosphere that reduces visual and physical obstacles, empowering visually impaired individuals to navigate their surroundings with confidence and independence.
