The Indian Bridal Fashion: Modern vs. Traditional

Traditional Indian wedding fashion gives an idea of the rich culture of India and its traditions. This fashion has however over time developed through the integration of traditional aspects with current trends to offer a multiplicity of bridal fashions. From the timeless beauty of the red silk saree to the trendy pastel lehenga, Indian bridal fashion has changed with time in a rather interesting manner. In this blog I intend to discuss and compare traditional and contemporary bridal wear, discussing trends in Indian bridal wear as well as unique ideas from the JD Institute’s fashion students.

Bridal fashion in India has nostalgic ties with the culture and traditions of the regions in India. Many times a bride’s dress depends on which part of the country you come from or which state you belong to. For instance, North Indian brides prefer the red-coloured lehenga that is gorgeously embellished whereas South Indian brides traditionally wear golden silk sarees.

Example: The Banarasi silk saree avails a lush feel fabric that is a favourite among many brides of India. It is best worn with big pieces of jewellery and goes well in portraying the Indian ethnic wealth culture.

Traditional Indian wedding fashion dress in India also has its meaning; the colour and kind of design on the clothing have their meaning. For ages, Red which signifies love and prosperity has always been the staple color for the bride in India. The dress material such as silk, brocade and velvet, besides the use of zari or threadwork or both, depicts the royal and elaborate aspect of Indian weddings.

An Indian bride is complete with jewellery without which it is incomplete. It is mandatory if not customary for brides across the length and breadth of India to adorn themselves with heavy gold necklaces, maang tikkas and bangles. Such pieces may possess religious and social relevance, to transmit from generation of ancestors.

In JD Institute, fashion course, it is compulsory for the brides-to-be to learn the new and traditional trends in jewelry that should be followed while designing modern bridal dresses that reflect their traditional ethos.

Traditional Indian wedding fashion apparel is still a favourite, however, today’s bride can always go with the new Indian bridal wear styles. Today’s brides aim at both preserving traditions and incorporating trendy shrieks where necessary, and as much as the traditional brides avoided the use of a pastel pink, mint green or even white as they were deemed unlucky for a wedding.

Example: JD Institute of Fashion Technology graduate has created a modern Indian bridal wear line called pastel lehengas with simple ornamentation as an option instead of the festive red Lehenga that has a prayer of detailed work.

While choosing the dresses it is better to use tender fabrics such as chiffon, tulle, and organza so that the bride will not suffer, but the prestige of the bride and groom in the traditional bridal outfits won’t be lost. The contemporary bride buys outfits that represent her personality, and at the same time respect cultural values.

Minimalist Jewelry and Accessories

One of the big trends in today’s bride’s fashion is the lack of jewelry with preference given to simple necklaces. Instead of conventional and fancy wedding set dresses, many brides prefer elegant and stylish design this time. This trend is in line with simplicity that characterizes most of the modern bridal fashion wherein simplicity is achieved through the elimination of unnecessary ornamentation.

The modern developments have however seen many brides looking for ways to incorporate traditional practices in their gowns while at the same time incorporating modern fashions. Well, fusion Indian wedding fashion is a combination of style and tradition so that the brides can celebrate their traditions as they festive in modern fashion.

Example: Another JD Institute alumna has exhibited a bridal collection done with the area weaving skill known as zari work with contemporaneous cuts like A-line lehengas giving a new meaning to modern and traditional bride outfits.

Modern and traditional bridal fashion wear also encompasses even accessories to wear and how the bridal hair should be done. For example, the brides wear silk sarees with a modern twist of a belt over it or wearing a cape on lehenga.
