Product design, a process of imagining, creating and modifying products that solves the consumer’s problems in a given market and is a subset of Industrial design. It implies to create a new product or improve the way the existing product looks and is sold by a business to its customer. There are different stages in designing a product and usually done by a group of people with skills and training. With reference to design industry it is one of the most significant and growing businesses in the world.
A designer is someone who either fulfills an aspiration or solves a problem for a client. The basic traits required for a product designer are multi-disciplinary approach, positive attitude, critical thinking, sustainable approach, curiosity and open to new ideas.
The product design process:
Analyze/Empathise the problem: In order to build useful products, one needs to understand if there is a need for product. Some methods for user research are: User Interviews, Online Surveys, Contextual inquiry and Market Survey. Also, understanding the customer plays a crucial component of the product design process.
Define the problem: This step allows to understand the goal of the design project and provide clear objective of the work towards it. Identifying the problem is a major role. (https://blogs.20minutos.es/)
Ideate a solution: Once the problem is defined, the next process is to ideate it. Ideation is a time when team members brainstorm on a range of creative ideas and solutions that address the problem through brainstorming on creative ideas and come up with solutions to align with the future vision.
Prototypes: When the solution has been finalized it becomes easier to create prototype of the actual product to understand how the final image will come about and helps to evaluate a new design to enhance precision
Test the Solution: Testing the prototype is important as at this stage one can gauge any issues before production. It allows you to identify any usability issues before investing more time in developing the solution.
Pursuing a 4-years course in Bachelor Degree in Visual Arts (BVA)/B. Des. in Product Design, prepares a student to become a successful designer in the design industry. The student is trained in models, mockups, prototypes, design research methodology, materials and manufacturing mechanisms, multidisciplinary design, ability enhancement, design thinking etc. making the student understand the industry and giving exposure to them.
Product Design has become an important factor for companies in creative industries to come up with innovative new designs for successful new product. A degree in product design develops the creative design skills, communication skills, visual and spatial awareness, IT Skills, commercial and entrepreneurial skills, problem solving skills and presentation skills.
